Due to a recent WordPress vulnerability (what this blog runs on), someone managed to somewhat deface this blog temporarily. After quickly upgrading WordPress to the latest version, I apparently forgot to put all the files and packages back online, but now they are. All links should be working again.
Here’s some more Leopard stuff for the P5W-DH. In this package you’ll find kernel extensions for getting on-board sound and networking fully working (which will allow you to get TimeMachine and other things like Maya that have DRM).
Once you install them make sure you fix permissions before rebooting, remove Extensions.mkext (and don’t forget to backup the extensions you’re replacing in case i messed up or something goes wrong).
Just another quick update, new kexts have been released to allow Time Machine to work and also some other updated kexts to allow Leopard to run on normal PCs.
You can get them here if you don’t want to download one of the few “X86″ Leopard releases (ToH Release)
And here is a screenshot of Time Machine in action on my P5W-DH system.
I’ve been hit with a lot of work lately and some new projects and sadly I haven’t been able to devote some time to getting a guide out for 10.5 GM (Leopard) build 9a581. The build got leaked a few days ago, apple was trying to prevent it from reaching the underground by not releasing it to developers, but it still got out.
For now I’m simply going to provide my usual screenshot showing it in action, and links to a patcher that will take the standard 10.5 GM disk image and patch as well as patched 9a581 kernel. You will have to patch it yourself and do a lot of manual work if you want to do this, for now don’t ask how here, I will post a guide when I have time.

Here is a full version of the picture.
Also on friday there will be 2-3 10.5 GM x86 releases so you don’t have to manually patch things to get it to work.
Here are the patchit.sh script and needed files and the 9a581 patched kernel.
post in the comments if the links go dead.
Sorry for the downtime. I expected to start releasing some newer articles again and then my domain expired accidentally. What’s worse is I contacted my provider to have it renewed and they “forgot” to do it until this morning.
Anyways, the domain is back up, and more posts will come focusing on Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) on the P5W-DH.
Here’s a quick screenshot showing 9A559 running my P5W-DH with the 9A559 kernel (still in testing), most people are simply running the 9A527 kernel with this build.

Here is a full desktop picture of 9A559 in action while running VMWare Fusion 1.1 and installing WinXP.
Here’s a quick screenshot of the latest version of Lepoard (build 9A527) fully working on a P5W-DH and an e6400 (over-clocked to 3GHz). More details coming later on where to get the files needed to boot. The kernel was patched by Synthetix, you can check out his new OSX86 community site here at www.osx86scene.com.

Here is a full version of the picture.
There really hasn’t been much to post in this blog since everything pretty much works and has worked for a while on the Asus P5W-DH. However, for the last 2 months I’ve been playing with some Leopard dev builds and I’m happy to report I’ve been able to get all of them working on the P5W-DH, everything works and its faster than Tiger.
I’ll be posting some articles in the next few days with instructions and details on getting Leopard working with your P5W-DH.
just a heads up that all the security updates and quicktime updates that have come out recently in Software Update are safe to install and don’t require any patching if you’re on a intel CPU.
Apple recently released the 8.9.1 kernel sources (finally) so that means no more binary hacks with the official 8.9.1 kernel (the one used in 10.4.9). with the source out, netkas has released a new kernel with built-in r3d3 and a bunch of fixes for hackintoshes.
as usual you can get the kernel on irc server chat.osx86.hu and channel #1049 (note, chat.osx86.hu was recently hacked and is down now). you can also get the kernel from here.
dont forget to change the permissions and keep a backup of your old kernel too in case of any problems.
for any other kernel news from netkas, go here at his blog.
there’s a new 10.4.9 kernel that has auto-fsb detection and also fixes timing issues (clock going faster even if FSB was set). i suggest you all get it, it can be found on irc on server chat.osx86.hu and channel #1049 in the topic.
note: there are a few kernels, the one with HPET is the one i’ve been using, no problems at all.
realtek just updated the config tool to work with their 8187L driver. with this release we can now use our onboard wifi card in the p5w-dh. you can get the driver here.
note: i havent been able to get my wifi card to get an IP address or send/receive packets to my access point, however everyone has reported that it works, so give it a shot.

JaS just released his version of 10.4.9. while i haven’t tested this myself, i’m told it works perfectly on the p5w-dh. one thing you will need to do is get the latest taruga alcinject driver to get audio working. you can get it here.
Realtek has finally released an update driver for the RTL8187 chipset (what our p5w-dh has for its wifi), and the driver loads and detects the card, however it seems the realtek network chooser/config tool does not work at all so it makes the driver a bit useless at this point. however i expect them to release/fix his soon.
10.4.9 was recently released and with this comes a new kernel. some clever hackers are letting us use the latest and greatest kernel from apple with a few binary modifications of their own letting us use xnu-8.9.1.
koki recently released a release that works great on my system, however i ended up installing 10.4.8 JaS release on a clean partition and then updating using kiko’s installer. JaS just finished a release too and will be releasing his package soon and should be easier.
only problem you might run into with the loki release is that system.kext might not match your kernel. it needs to be version 8.9.1 with the newer kernel.
here’s some screenshots showing the new kernel and about this mac. no issues so far, everything working.

dont forget to install all your needed kexts if you’re going from a clean 10.4.8 to a 10.4.9. you’ll need sound, network, natit/titan, smbios, loginwindow.
i just found out you could post blog entries from inside TextMate so i’m using this post as a means of testing. you can find more details at this screencast. this is great considering i do all of my work in TextMate and the interface is nice and clean, no need to deal with those horrible web interfaces to create or modify entries.
here’s a report of SATA raid working with the onboard ICH7R :
two sataII matching drives installed onto both orange ports. Jumpers set for “raid0 (fast)” [jp2 only] jmicron controller disabled, sata set to standard (not raid or ahci). No errors on boot. I see 300 GB usable which is just about right for two 160GB drives.
i haven’t tested or confirmed this but will try it soon. more info can be found in this thread
Taruga has released some new sound drivers for the ALC882 chipset that the Asus P5W-DH uses. this new driver uses the Apple HDA driver which gives better sound quality than AppleAzalia and also allows you to use your micrphone to get sound-in working.
to get the driver, download it here. you should also visit this thread to report your results and also look for any new versions of the driver.
you can also discuss this driver on irc at irc.macspeak.net in #ALC88x
one of the first things you’ll notice is that everything seems to be going too fast in 10.4.8-JaS, the reason is that the FSB auto-detection isnt working on the built-in kernel. to fix this and get some nice performance/stability improvements, get the latest semthex kernel from irc.macspeak.net in #kernel
more information about semthex’s work and kernel can be found at his website here.
in case you aren’t able to get onto irc, get the latest snapshot from here.
once you have the new kernel, backup your old on in / with the following command:
sudo mv /mach_kernel /mach_kernel-backup
once you’ve backed up your kernel, move over the new one and fix permissions:
sudo mv ~/Desktop/mach_kernel /
sudo chown root:wheel /mach_kernel
sudo chmod 755 /mach_kernel
reboot your system once you’re done, if for whatever reason it wont boot or you get a kernel panic, you can switch back to your old kernel by hitting F8 on bootup after BIOS messages and type :
kernel mach_kernel-backup
checkout Paulicat’s site with his modified AppleSMBIOS.kext to get ‘About This Mac’ fully working with 10.4.8-JaS.
download the modified AppleSMBIOS.kext from here. backup your original one in /System/Library/Extentions and then replace it with the new one, then fix permissions :
sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleSMBIOS.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 AppleSMBIOS.kext
reboot and ‘About This Mac’ will fully work in ‘More Info’.

this will let you get networking, usb, and audio working on a ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe motherboard on JaS 10.4.8 DVD.
get the following from here and install it, up to you to fix permissions after you’ve installed them: http://rakis.net/~justin/p5w-dh
for audio, get AppleAzaliaAudio.kext.zip, unzip and put the kext in your /System/Library/Extentions/ (remove old one first and remove/backup AppleHDA.kext
for network get IONetworkingFamily.kext.zip, unzip and put the kext in your /System/Library/Extentions/ (remove old one first)
fix permissions :
sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleAzaliaAudio.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 AppleAzaliaAudio.kext
sudo chown -R root:wheel IONetworkingFamily.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 IONetworkingFamily.kext
cleanup kext caches :
sudo rm Extensions.kextcache
sudo rm Extensions.mkext
then unzip IOUSBFamily-261.4.2_Intel.pkg.zip and install the package.
reboot and everything should be working (audio, both ethernet ports, USB).
